How much pay raise to ask for?

  • It depends on market conditions and your level of expertise. Also, it depends on how much you are are worth to your boss.
  • If you don’t ask, your boss may give you a small pay raise. And consider you would be happy with it.
  • It is always best to ask for more than you are expecting. Then discuss and negotiate. Because you rarely get what you ask for.
  • So for example if you are expecting an 8% pay raise, ask for 14%.

How to ask for a pay raise?

  • Prepare your justification for a salary increase.
  • Ask your boss for a meeting.
  • At the meeting, ask your boss and explain your justification.
  • Do not push your boss into making a quick decision.
  • You have a better chance if you ask during a meeting. Instead of writing a raise request letter. Because during the meeting it is easier to discuss.
  • Keep track of your achievements. As they are the best justification for a pay raise
