Raise request letter question. Should you write one, how much to ask for and what are the best ways to achieve a pay raise in 2025?
- Request a pay raise by setting up a meeting with your boss. Then discuss the pay request in the meeting.
- You don’t need to write a letter. Unless your boss asks you to do so, which is rare.
- Some are more comfortable in writing a letter or email, instead of a face-to-face meeting. See my vital tips below, before writing a letter or email. Also see my pay increase tips for women and men.
How much of a pay raise to ask for in 2025
- It depends on market conditions and your level of expertise. Also, it depends on how much you are worth to the team.
- If you don’t ask, your boss may give you a small remuneration increase and consider that you would be happy with it.
- It also depends on your personal circumstances, financial situation and risk level.
- Usually, it is best to ask for more than you are expecting. Then discuss and negotiate. Because you rarely receive the salary, wage or rate that you ask for.
- So, for example, if you are expecting an 8% increase, you can ask for around 18%,

How to ask for a pay raise
- Prepare your justification for a salary increase.
- Ask your immediate manager for a meeting. It is not a good idea to talk or to ask another manager, regardless of the other manger’s level.
- At the meeting, ask your immediate manager and explain your justification.
- Do not push your boss into making a quick decision.
Why I don’t recommend sending a raise request letter
- You have a better chance if you ask during a meeting, instead of asking for an increase by writing a letter. Because during the meeting it is easier to discuss.
